ABOUT

ABOUT

Donnelly Manufacturing are a 2nd & 3rd generation family business, based in Cork City. A family of French-Polishers and antique furniture restorers, they have in recent times developed a manufacturing side to their business.

Their central product, 'Ray's Primer' - is a superior shellac-based primer, wholly manufactured in Cork City, using the finest ingredients. Their 'Ray's' brand is named after Raymond Donnelly, late father of Victor Snr., the owner of Donnelly Manufacturing Ltd.  Ray was a highly skilled French-Polisher, having served his 7 year apprenticeship from aged 13, (c.1945), within the furniture department of one of Cork's most respected stores, Cash & Company Ltd., ('Cash's' - now Brown Thomas).

Ray continued to work at Cash's until the furniture side of the business closed in the late 1970's. The great part of this story is that Ray trained all his children in the art & skill of French-Polishing - this led to son Victor opening his own restoration business in the early 1990's, which Ray joined soon after.

Victor & Ray often made a concoction for Painters, using a shellac base, that they called 'blinding' - this was a great product that effectively covered & sealed knots in timber, as well as other stains and marks. This traditional shellac and pigment method, is the inspiration and powerful foundation that Donnelly Manufacturing use to make 'Ray's Primer'.

Today, Victor runs Donnelly Manufacturing, and is heavily involved in the R&D of new products, assisted by his son, Victor Junior.

ABOUT

“I am very particular about the products that I use for hand painting kitchens and bespoke furniture; the final results have to be flawless. I find Ray’s Shellac Primer to be superior to similar products on the market. It applies easily, dries quickly and covers really well. I have no hesitation recommending this product, and I will continue to use it”

“Really happy to try out and test an Irish product and I am delighted to say that Ray’s Primer passed our tests with flying colours. We tried their shellac-based product on stained interior walls, water-marked ceilings and new timber doors. It did what it claimed to do, and in fact it surpassed similar products, without a bother. A great primer that we will continue to use”

Barry Sheehan, Barry Sheehan Painting Contractors, Cork.

"We are a property restoration company that deal mainly with insurance claims.  We were asked to try out Ray's Primer on a fire-damaged property recently. The walls and ceilings were heavily coated with soot deposits. These were cleaned but staining will remain after the cleaning process. We found Ray's Primer to be a very good product in this situation. The coverage was excellent. Where one coat was sufficient with Ray's Primer, we found that two coats was necessary when a similar product was used. I would have no hesitation in recommending this product in similar circumstances and we will use it again.

“In my work as a bespoke furniture designer & maker, every piece I make is handmade and finished to high standards, using the best wood and finishing products that I can source. Ray’s Primer has proved to be one of those products. I am delighted to endorse this primer. It applies without fuss and easily seals knots and primes wood, ready for the next stage”.

“We needed to cover dark crayon marks and scuff marks on a bedroom wall, and used the shellac-based primer from Ray’s Primer. It easily covered the marks and several months later there is no sign of the stains coming through. The top coat kept in place well also, with no chipping. A really good product, which we will keep using”.

Mick Ronan, Painter & Decorator, Kinsale, Co.Cork.

“Ray’s Shellac Primer is a great product…In our work, we need a primer that can deal with stains, knots and odours – and Ray’s Primer has proven to us that it can deal with all those problems effectively, and as a bonus, it has very good coverage”.

Shane Callaghan, Painter & Decorator, Cork.
